Brendan commenced training in All Japan Kendo Renmei (ZNKR) Seitei Iaido in early 2003 in West Australia at the Budokan Academy under the guidance of Ramon Lawrence and Jason Flockton, until late 2005 when he relocated to Canberra.
In 2007 in partnership with Damon Schearer, who had recently moved to Canberra from Queensland, they founded the Kuroyama Budokai.
He has travelled to Japan and continued his Iaido study through the guidance of senior Japanese instructors - Oda Katsuo Hanshi 8 Dan XXX prefecture (vale 2020), Nagayama Kuniaki Kyoshi 7 Dan of Miyagi prefecture, and most recently Komura Shigeru Hanshi 8th Dan of Gifu prefecture.
He has a strong interest in supporting the governance and growth of Jodo in Australia - he has regularly attended Australian Kendo Renmei (AKR) Jodo National Seminars and Championships since 2004, and from 2012-2021 he was a Member and Secretary of the AKR Jodo Board.

He has travelled to Japan on numerous occasions training privately in Sendai with Kuniaki Nagayama Sensei, 7 Dan Kyoshi Jodo 7 Dan Kyoshi Iaido and attending ZNKR Miyagi Prefecture Iaido and Jodo seminars. He has also trained with Obayashi Tadashi Sensei, 8 Dan Kiyoshi, of the Dai Ken Kyo Iaido club in Osaka.
